French football star Antoine Griezmann has invested in Danish payments fintech Flatpay as the company surpassed 10,000 active merchants in France, just 18 months after entering the market. The investment comes as Flatpay continues its rapid European expansion, serving more than 100,000 merchants across seven countries and reaching unicorn status in 2025.

  • This is more than a typical athlete endorsement. Griezmann is taking an equity stake, aligning his long-term interests with Flatpay's growth rather than simply fronting a marketing campaign.
  • The partnership is built on product familiarity. Griezmann's family businesses already use Flatpay's payment terminals, giving the investment greater credibility than a conventional celebrity partnership.
  • For Flatpay, the investment strengthens trust in its fastest-growing market. France has doubled its merchant base in six months, with around 40% of new customers arriving through referrals, making brand credibility a powerful acquisition lever.
  • The deal also reflects a broader shift in sports-fintech relationships. Instead of simply signing sponsorship agreements, fintechs are increasingly bringing elite athletes onto their cap tables as investors, turning sporting influence into long-term strategic capital.
