Busey Bank is taking its long-running relationship with Illinois Athletics straight onto the uniform, becoming the Fighting Illini’s first jersey patch partner across ten varsity sports.
- Busey Bank has expanded its longstanding partnership with the University of Illinois to become the Official Financial Services Partner of the Fighting Illini and the athletics department’s inaugural jersey patch sponsor beginning this fall. As a charter member of Illinois Athletics’ new Pillar Partnership Program, Busey will have exclusive jersey patch rights across football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer and men’s and women’s golf. Its logo will also move onto sideline apparel worn by coaches, putting the bank across some of the most valuable and frequently televised inventory Illinois Athletics can offer.

- The timing makes this one especially interesting. The expanded agreement follows the NCAA’s approval of corporate jersey patch sponsorships earlier in 2026, opening a fresh commercial lane for college athletic departments, and Illinois has gone straight to a familiar hometown banking partner for its first move. Josh Whitman, Director of Athletics at the University of Illinois, called it a “high-profile, first-of-its-kind opportunity,” adding that the university wanted a partner that could sit closely alongside its student-athletes, staff and Fighting Illini brand.

- There is plenty happening beyond the patch too. Busey will maintain title sponsorship of the Fighting Illini radio network, while the broader partnership will run across athletic venues, broadcasts, digital platforms, fan experiences and community programmes through Learfield’s Fighting Illini Sports Properties. Existing activations including Busey Bank FamILLy Movie Night, Field Trip Day at Illini Women’s Basketball, Illinois Baseball Day and the Busey Bank Kid Captain of the Game will continue as part of the expanded package.
- The local connection runs deep here. Busey Bank was founded in Champaign-Urbana in 1868, only months after the University of Illinois, and has since grown into a regional financial institution with $18.04 billion in assets and clients across 10 states. Van Dukeman, Chairman and CEO of First Busey Corporation, described the agreement as an investment in Illinois Athletics, its students and alumni, giving a nearly 160-year hometown relationship one of the biggest branding upgrades available in college sport.
